BANGKOK, (ILO news) - The International Labour Organization (ILO) has been honoured by the Royal Thai Government for its contributions to occupational safety and health (OSH). At a ceremony held on 12 November 2024, in Bangkok to mark Occupational Safety Officer Day 2024, the ILO received a Certificate of Honour from Thailand’s Labour Ministry.

The award, presented by Lt. Saroj Komkay, Director General of the Department of Labor Protection and Welfare, acknowledges the ILO’s support, alongside 22 other establishments, towards the country’s “Safety Thailand” policy.

Oktavianto Pasaribu, Deputy Director and the ILO representative said: “The ILO is honoured to receive this Certificate, which recognizes our work and contribution toward Thailand’s efforts to improve safe working conditions for workers.”

The event saw participation from more than 1,000 Occupational Safety Officers, representatives of workers’ and employers’ organizations, and occupational safety associations across Thailand, both in-person at the Ministry of Labour and online.

Since 1985, Thailand has specified that business establishments employ personnel dedicated to managing safety, known as “Occupational Safety Officers” or Safety Officers. During the event, 28 outstanding Occupational Safety Officers were awarded decorative pins.

Thailand has ratified the ILO’s Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 2006 (No. 187). The ILO continues to promote workers’ safety and health through its ongoing project, “Promoting a safe and healthy working environment in Thailand and Cambodia”, funded by the Government of Japan. This initiative emphasizes the importance of a safe and healthy working environment as a fundamental principle and right at work, particularly addressing emerging risks including mental health at work, in Thailand and Cambodia.
