Trade for Jobs Uganda: Sector selection study

Examining job and export potential in nine sectors

This report serves as a sector selection study to identify two high potential sectors for a future Trade for Jobs project in Uganda. This study is a collaboration between ILO Systems Change Initiative, International Trade Centre (ITC) and the Swedish Embassy in Kampala.

Trade for Jobs is a project concept which is being trialled in Uganda for the first time. It aims to strengthen and promote trade as a mechanism for creating more and better jobs for youth, women and those living in poverty. It will achieve this through:

  • Supporting enterprises to move up the value chain to processing, value addition and diversification;
  • Improving the business environment for job creation and trade;
  • Enhancing MSME competitiveness in high-potential sectors; and
  • Improving job quality and viable pathways towards decent work, particularly for the working poor.
