ILO PROSPECTS and the FOTEA Foundation collaborated for this project funded by the Government of Netherlands empowering 60 young people from refugee and host communities in Uganda with mobile photography skills. This initiative equipped these youths with the tools to document their experiences, advocate for social change, and bridge the gap between refugee and host communities.

Uganda, the largest refugee-hosting country in Africa, has a progressive refugee policy. However, the need for young people to develop new skills to navigate displacement contexts and contribute to their socio-economic development is ever-growing.  This program addressed this need by providing participants with:

  • Transferable digital skills in mobile photography: Youths learned how to capture compelling images using their mobile phones, fostering visual literacy and self-expression.
  • Narrative storytelling training: Participants gained the skills to effectively communicate their stories and perspectives through their photographs.
  • Social media promotion training: Youths were equipped to leverage social media platforms to advocate for decent work opportunities, social justice, and youth rights.
